An alternate payee can be a spouse, child, dependent or other eligible relative of a plan participant who is recognized by a Domestic Relations order (DRO) as having the right to receive all or a portion of the participant’s retirement benefits payable under an annuity or other plan. The receiving beneficiary can rollover amounts received as an alternate payee only if he/she is a spouse.
